Hop Showcase

Hop Showcase for 2019!

Sponsored by Yakima Chief Hops

We have made some changes to this category to try to keep it fresh and possibly level the judging field with the APA style. Give us your feedback.

If anything written here is not clear, please immediately contact James Smith, the 2019 Bluebonnet Brewoff director at director@bluebonnetbrewoff.org with your concerns.

YCP has given us three different Cryo Hops: Citra, Simcoe, and Palisade.

BCOEM entry will have two custom BCOEM styles:

  • Hop Showcase Single Hop, Any Style (1-26). Entries in this custom style must be brewed with only one of the three showcase hops and can be of BJCP beer style 1 -26. The goal of this style is to make a beer that stands out with the single hop.
  • HOP Showcase American Pale Ale. Entries in this custom style must be brewed with Showcase Hops with each addition using 60% or more of the showcase hop. This means the other hops can be used but for no more than 40% of any addition. The goal if this style is level the judging field by using a single style.

These two styles will have an information to judges field for the entrant to identify which of the three showcase hops was used.

For the Single Hop Any Style entries, the information to judges field will also be used to identify the BJCP style to be used to judge the entry and for any BJCP required information for that BJCP style.

2015 BJCP Guidelines – Classic styles 1-26

Rules

Entrants will be provided hops in 0.5 ounce packages and are required to brew a beer that showcases the hop.

Brewers may not use other sources of the same showcase hop. The showcase hop must come from the Bluebonnet’s allotment of showcase hops.

An entrant can only enter one entry in the Hop Showcase medal category. So pick one custom style or the other but not both.

There are three different Cryo Hops: Citra, Simcoe, and Palisade.

Packages are 0.5 ounce each.
Multiple packages are available.
Each club has been given an inventory of product.
Total we received was 50 packages of each. Divided between the sponsoring clubs.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be judged using the BJCP 2015 guidelines. Judges will base their overall impression score on the brewer’s ability to showcase the given hop.  Judges are instructed to adjust the classic guideline to fit the aroma and flavor of the hop provided, for example, if the entry is a German Pilsner with a showcase hop but the hop does not provide any floral or spicy hop aroma or flavor then they are to give points and not deduct points for using a melon, earthy or tropical fruit-like hop.

Points

No points will be awarded for Homebrewer of the Year, Club of the year, Mueller-Browne Quality, Lone Star Circuit or Best of Show

Awards: The first place winner will be awarded a Bluebonnet Brew-off Stein and medal. Second and third place will receive medals.
