2020

Due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak and guidance from the CDC, this year’s Bluebonnet Brew-Off has been cancelled.

The Bluebonnet Brew-Off awards will be live streamed from our Facebook and Youtube accounts, starting at 6:00pm on Saturday March 21. Tune in and watch!

March 15th, 2020 Bluebonnet Update

After careful consideration of many possible alternative scenarios, including holding the event as we normally do, the Board of Directors has regretfully decided it is in the best interest of everyone, based on what we know today about COVID-19, to cancel the Bluebonnet Brewoff this year. Our event is unique and could potentially spread the virus quickly if someone in attendance was unknowingly infected. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s event in 2021.

If you wish to cancel your hotel reservation, contact the hotel directly. The hotel will not charge fees if you cancel 24 hours ahead of your reservation. Here is a link to the HOTEL INFORMATION.

If you want a refund of your event tickets, or merchandise, email bluebonnetbrewoff@gmail.com from the paypal email you used no later than April 15, 2020. Bluebonnet is a 501c3 educational non-profit. If you choose to not request a refund, you can donate the cost of your tickets (we will provide a receipt for tax purposes).

Awards will be announced on Facebook and on our website on or before 7pm Saturday. Stay tuned to Facebook for further details.

We understand there is a group of individuals that are planning to stay at the hotel this weekend. This gathering is not in any way sponsored or organized by the Bluebonnet Brewoff.

An address from the 2020 Bluebonnet Brew-Off Director

Welcome to the 34th Annual Bluebonnet Brew-Off, the largest single site home brew competition in the US, and perhaps largest in the world. It is a combined beer tasting/education event and a home brew competition. I am honored to be your host for what should prove to be another fantastic event! Not a lot of huge changes to announce, for the 2020 competition and festival. I am fortunate to have the benefit of so many past successes on which to build, and even more fortunate to have the talent and dedication of the fine ladies and gentlemen of the planning committee. Without their efforts, the Bluebonnet Brew-Off would not be possible.

There’s still time to enter your favorite homebrew, and maybe , brew some of the lighter ales, in time for the competition! Judging will continue with split judging locations, in Tarrant and Dallas Counties, for ease of accessibility. Thanks go out to Texas Brewing Inc. and Brewery Direct, for lending their facilities. We’ll have a couple of surprises in store for new judges, including a chance to receive a scholarship for BJCP certification tuition.

Due to our success with the very popular Food and Beer Pairing Luncheon, and unmatched hospitality beer service facilities, “The Big Thirsty”, we continue our relationship with the Sheraton DFW Airport Hotel. Please follow the “Conference Info” link for special room rates and a weekend full of activities.

I am pleased to announce our Keynote Speaker will be Travis Rupp, Research & Development Manager and Beer Archaeologist at Avery Brewing Company, in Boulder Colorado.

Travis Rupp is both an adjunct lecturer at the University of Colorado Boulder in Classics, Anthropology, Art History, and Continuing Education and a full-time brewer in Special Projects at Avery Brewing Company.

Travis teaches Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Near Eastern, and Roman art, archaeology, and history at CU Boulder.  He has presented at CAMWS (Classical Associations of the Middle West and South) His research interests combine his two professions and focus on beer and alcohol in antiquity.

Travis will give a short address, to kick off the weekend’s festivities and lead a technical discussion on Saturday morning. Travis is an accomplished beer scholar, as well as an entrepreneur with an impressive list of credentials travisrupp.om/resume/.

Everyone will have a chance to say hello to Travis, Friday night, at the Commercial Beer tasting, while sampling offerings from many of the top craft breweries. Festivities will continue throughout the weekend including retail vendors, pub crawls and technical discussions, with a roundtable discussion led by Matt Morriss of Rabbit Hole Brewing. There will be an awards ceremony, to announce the top placing brewers of the competition, Saturday night, followed by a sampling of Home Brews from the area’s Homebrew clubs and independent brewers.

The Bluebonnet Brew-Off strives to bring you the best of Home brewed and commercial beer, in the community, as well as being a source of education and inspiration in the brewing arts. There are many beer festivals in North Texas now, but the Bluebonnet Brew off stands alone as several events in one!  Tickets are available for Friday only, Saturday only, or the full event. Register early at  http://bluebonnetbrewoff.org/tickets. The DFW Sheraton hotel has blocked a set of rooms at special event pricing. We do recommend overnight stay or taxi/uber/lyft for safety.  See you at the 34th annual Bluebonnet Brew-Off!
